Is 90% Good Enough? Maybe.

What do you think? Is 90% Good enough, it just might be! I read an article about course design. It was very interesting and informative. One day I will share some of the amazing insights I learned about course design, but today I want to share with you a quote that gave me an Ah Ha! Moment. While the quote was applicable to the topic, it also, in my opinion, has some great life applications.

Seeking perfection may slow you down.

yourbestI know I have written about this before, but it poses such a stumbling block for so many, including myself, I felt compelled to share this quote, in hopes that it will propel some of you forward. The quotes say, “…You’re never more than 90 percent complete on any project you’re working on. …. Holding things up for that next 10 percent improvement might take longer than the total time allocated for the project.” (1) This quote is intended to encourage instructional designers not to get stuck on perfection.

I get it at first glance this statement isn’t that great. But what if you stop and pause and reflection your life. If you are an entrepreneur, I can guarantee you have at least one, if not more, projects you have started, and then it stalled because you wanted to add one more piece that wasn’t quite ready. I bet if you were honest with yourself, you stalled on a project that was good enough to release at 90%.

Do your best, and share your best.

What I a not saying is that we should provide our customers and clients with half-finished projects. However, what I am saying is if at 90% your project is excellent, release it so you can move forward!  If at 90% your project will deliver what you promised to your client, let it go!

I get the fear of failing (I suffer from that). I understand the desire to have all your ducks in a row (…that is me too!). I also know that you may be stalling because you are uncertain about how everything will work out. You want to know that it will end well. The thing is there are no guarantees or promises. The only guarantee there is that you will not make progress if you stand still! Make 2018your year to move! Get off the sidelines, and get in the game, it is time to take action!

Time to use your talents

One of the greatest challenges for new entrepreneurs is determining what their gifts are. What are their strengths? For me, this is also determining your talent. If that is you, you may want to check one of my recent posts, 6 Ways To Find Your Strength. Finding your strength, I believe, is nothing more than having conscious awareness of the gift that God has given you. Once you recognize your gift, you invest the time and energy to get better and do better.

EmbraceYourTalent2“Your talent is God’s gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to God.” -Leo Buscaglia. We all have a talent because we all were created with a purpose. There is something that you naturally do, without much effort, that others would find difficult or challenging. For you, it Is much like breathing. As a matter of fact, you would probably don’t think much about it. However, I hope that you will be more conscious of that gift. Are you using it? Are you doing the things you were called to do? If you are, awesome! If you aren’t what’s stopping, you?

Have you ever considered this, your talent cost you nothing? I mean it is this gift that you are born with. Have you ever noticed that some people with the same gift utilize it different? Some people take that gift and use it to make theirs, and other peoples live better, however, some may be sitting on your gift. Why is that? Consider this, “Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work.”-Stephen King having talent is not enough. It’s about you are taking that talent and investing some work.

Perhaps your gift is writing. You have this amazing gift to make words leap off a page and paint these amazing images in the reader’s mind. Now if you have this talent, and never write a word, how doe that helps anyone. What if you take that talent, and teach. Or what if you decide to write a children’s book. Perhaps an amazing novel. You will help others by providing a simple mental escape. Everyone needs that break. Perhaps you may feel like you are not good enough.  Maybe you aren’t the best, but that should not stop you from trying. “There may be people who have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do – and I believe that.” Derek Jeter.

Having a talent is really not that extraordinary because everyone has a talent. What makes you extraordinary taking that talent, and using it and improving on it. Having the courage to step up and share that talent with the world.

Live with purpose, on purpose

postimage“The only way you will ever get through where you are and what you are going through is to actually go thru.” That is what I have learned from life as I have gone through many stages in my life. It doesn’t matter, good, bad. Up or down. No matter what the season, you can’t avoid life, so it is best to enjoy the journey.

Once I realized that my life is a journey it has changed my perspective on how I celebrate, morn and weather the difficult times in my life. Now I savor each step, each day, each moment. Suddenly (now that I am past 40) they seem to be flying by.

There are about three or four quotes that I recall from memory frequently to push me through life. One of those is, “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.” -Charles R. Swindoll. Life doesn’t feel that way, does it? It feels like it is really about everything that happens. That is not the case at all. It is about what you do with what happens to you. It is about your response. When it gets hard, do you push through or do you hide? When it is joyful, do you embrace or ignore?

Remeber. Your perspective is powerful. Choose to be an active participant in life. Be engaged, be purposeful, be useful and you will find that you will be happy.

It’s A New Year

Since about November of 2016 I have been in a very reflective mode. Thinking about what I have done, and what it is that I want to accomplish in 2017. I made list upon lists. Rewrote my goals several times. I really began to get frustrated with myself, I still felt as if I was just walking around in circles.

However on December 31st, I sat down and wrote out a complete action plan for 2017! It was like it just came to me, but I know the time that I took these past two month paid off.

I am really excited about the up coming year. My goal is truly to embrace my passion, and that is teaching! And I realize that it doesn’t have to be in a school, it is just important for me to teach. I will be using two blogs to accomplish this… and In 2017 I will be focusing on teaching content that will truly allow people to walk into the calling that God has for them.  This blog (my word press blog will just allow my to track my progress.

I believe what keeps my centered is my walk with Christ, and as a Christian I have a responsibility and a desire to share the gospel. Like wise, as a single mom I recognize there is an amazing financial stress on single income homes. Last year I began creating a small, yet helpful income stream from online marketing. My hope is to share what I know and hopefully others will find use in it.

I have set up a series of monthly, weekly and daily action steps that I must complete in order to actively move forward with my goals. I have also set up a tracking system for it all. The fact that I am writing this post is evidence that I have started  my action steps.
